Forum: etree Subject: download speed using ftp

i have bee having trouble with using smart ftp 2.5 and the "help" they have on their site requires a degree in computer science to understand. mybe there are users of this site who can help me out--please.

my 30 day trial copy of smart ftp that i have been using perfectly for the past 2 and half years finally expired and stopped working so i downloaded the newer 2.5. it seems to be similar enough that i should be able to use it, but my biggest problem is that i can't even seem to open up a folder to get to the show i want to download and everything i try is just SLOW. it took me two days to download one ratdog show whose directory i was actually able to open.

i have
-changed the timeout settings in preferences
-enabled the "keep alive" feature"
-tried both port and passive modes

any other suggestions?

i suppose one problem could be with the archive servers themselves too. are they so busy that it becomes difficult to get a response? anyone else having such troubles? i have been using this archive for over three years and the speed varies but i have never seen it this slow or expreienced the problem of not being able to open a directory even

i suppose that it could be my university's server that is slow too, but that seems really even less likely since nothing else is that slow like internet explorer.

HELP!

Thanks

Servers had some troubles yesterday and were down for many hours, is that when you were trying?

Can you provide a link to the show you are trying to download?

i was at the 100000 lakes festival in july so i thought i would try and download the shows from that. here is one of them (derek trucks band). i have the ratdog one going now and it seems to be going at a speed of about 35kB/sec +/- and it often dips down to 0 for stretches of time

FTP directory /3/items/DTB2006-07-21.sen421.flac16 at ia341235.us.archive.org

or

thanks
